The coins are part of the third series of Chinese Almanac Coins designed by Mr Xu Yunfei of Shanghai Mint. The previous two issues were the 2006 Year of the Dog coins and 2005 Year of the Rooster coins. The simple and lively image of the boar is integrated with ancient Chinese seal characters in a design that combines tradition with modernity.
As with the previous two issues, the Year of the Boar coins will use a mix of traditional minting technology and unique colour application. In particular, the 2007 $10 Silver Piedfort Proof Coin features the boar in full colour with a colourful peony flower on its belly. The peony is a traditional Chinese symbol of blessings and festive cheer. Selected premium sets will include a unique 8-sided floral-shaped ingot featuring a harmonious family of pigs.
